Laura & Shawn’s wedding…

Simple. Elegant. Natural. These three little words are all it takes describe both the wedding and the couple. Perfect, right? Especially considering that the wedding should reflect the couple!

Shawn and Laura’s wedding was just that – simple, elegant and natural with a few dashes of nuttiness thrown in here and there. Yep, I sure did say nuttiness! Their last name is Nutt and they are the first ones to share the laugh. And they say only fools fall in love… it looks like Nutts do too;)

So here it is – Laura and Shawn’s beautiful day!

Marcy - Awesome pictures!! What a great day, Laura you were absolutely gorgeous!

Sonal & Paul’s wedding…

I’m going to let you all in on a secret that we rarely tell. Our love of photography, this business and our whole photo-centric lifestyle all developed, along with countless black and whites, in the darkroom at Clinton Community College. We started at Clinton completely directionless. We both loved art and we loved each other and nothing else mattered at the time. We had no clue what our future would hold, but we knew two things, we wanted be together every minute of every day and we wanted to be able to submerse ourselves in art. We enrolled blindly. I chose as many art, film, English and psychology classes as I could. Jason, on the other hand, was instantly drawn to photography. After the first class he announced to me that he was in love. By the second or third class his teacher, Laura, expressed that he had a lot of natural talent. She pushed him to do better. I pushed him to do better. We spent more hours than I thought possible in that darkroom, printing, re-printing, making sure that each print was bright enough and that the contrast was just right. When we weren’t in the darkroom, we were out shooting. I also fell in love and Jason started teaching me. Soon he had taken all the photo classes that Clinton had to offer and Laura started him on new projects through independent study. After Clinton, we enrolled in the Arts program at Concordia. We got accepted. We gathered up all of our necessary tuition money and, at the very last minute, we used it to buy equipment instead. We’ve never looked back!

Why am I telling you all of this now? Because Sonal and Paul’s wedding was at Clinton last Friday and the musty smell of the hallways and the books in the library and the look of the marble staircase and feel of the balcony railing all brought back so many memories for us. The last thing we ever thought when we were students was that one day we would be supporting ourselves as artists and photographing a beautiful wedding on the very property that started everything.

I am also telling you this because sometimes we have a teacher, like Laura, that just inspires us to be better. I bet that is exactly the kind of teacher Sonal is. I get that feeling simply by being around her. She is so calm and cool. She’s put together like no one I’ve ever met before. Totally, undeniably type A to the highest degree, yet so incredibly kind and caring. A wonderful teacher, I’m sure, and an even more wonderful new wife and best friend for Paul. And Paul? He’s definitely not a bad catch, either. Handsome, funny, loving. Not bad at all! Right, Sonal?

These two are amazing. Energetic. Joyful. And that energy and joy spreads to everyone around them. Just try to make it though their slide-show without smiling. I dare you.

A big congratulations to Sonal and Paul! May the future bring you much love and happiness!

Barinder & Raymond’s wedding reception…

Is it wrong to be drooling over our own photos? Because I really, truly, can not stop. Barinder and Raymond’s wedding reception was my favorite of the three days, so in a sense, I am feeling like we have saved the best for last. I know that the ceremony was indeed the most important and symbolic day, but I just can’t keep from smiling when I look at the photos of these two beautiful, glowy newlyweds celebrating their new beginning. With the pressure of the ceremony over, these two were able to let their true personalities shine through. Every single one of these photos makes my heart happy and my mind content in knowing that Barinder and Raymond have found their perfect match. What more could we want for anyone? True love. Joy. The excitement of a new beginning.

Congratulations Raymond and Barinder! May the future bring you all the happiness that life has to offer.

Barinder & Raymond’s wedding ceremony…

Saturday was Barinder & Raymond’s wedding ceremony! So familiar and similar to other weddings we’ve been to, yet so different in a few ways… bride in red… heads covered and no shoes in temple… and my favorite – we sat on the floor. I’ve never felt so comfortable at work before! Everyone who knows me knows that, one, I’m always barefoot at home (drives my mother crazy, ha ha) and two, I usually sit on the floor, so, for me, this was a wonderful way to shoot. We were also allowed to move around as much as we needed to. Not always a luxury we get unless we are shooting an outdoor wedding. Since the reception was to follow on Sunday, keep in mind that this post is strictly ceremony. The next and final post of Raymond & Barinder’s wedding will be of the reception and the formal portraits! Be prepared to be left breathless.

On to the ceremony!

Enjoy!

Barinder’s Mehndi party…

We love new experiences. We love bright colors. And we love Barinder! After all, she’s the one who invited us in and introduced us to a whole new experience in photography and weddings in general; a traditional Indian wedding! Over the next few days I will be posting a three part blog post of Barinder and Raymond (aka Karam) and their vivid and extraordinarily detailed wedding.

First up – Barinder’s Mehndi party!

This party took place last Thursday and was such an amazing event for Jason and I as photographers. There was beauty and detail everywhere! At this point you are probably wondering what the heck I’m talking about, right? Well, please keep in mind that I am not a sociologist or a writer and I will try my hardest to explain the gist of it. A Mehndi party is for the bride and her family. It takes place a few days before the wedding, and it is super important because the bride receives her mehndi, or henna tattoos, at this party. I’ve never seen mehndi up close before and had no idea how intricate the design is, or how much meaning is involved. Barinder’s tattoos had such beautiful detail and even featured a bride and groom motif! I had no idea! Seriously amazing stuff! Two fun facts – mehndi is not just decorative! According to the Kama Sutra it is one of the many gifts of women and can transform you into a temptress! So ladies, if you’re having trouble catching that man… maybe you should call a henna artist, ha ha! And two – the groom’s name is usually hidden somewhere in the elaborate design and, in order to impress his bride, he has to find it. I know where it is… but I’m not telling. Seriously though, I hope Raymond found it by now.

Aside from the mehndi there was also tons of food, crazy-loud music and plenty of dancing. In short, Indians know how to party! I mean it. Think of the wildest party you’ve ever been to… now turn up the music, get every. single. person. out on the dance floor and then start throwing money! I love it! And I hope you love these photos!

Thank you Barinder for giving us this experience!
